Arianna Huffington is the founder of Huffington Post, a news consolidation service that is extremely popular and has a global footprint. She is rich and powerful. The process of nurturing and building Huffington Post took a toll on her physical, mental and emotional life. At some point in life, she had to meet herself head on and address a simple question: Is all this money and power making me complete? The resounding answer was "no". The immediate obvious next question was: "Then what?" Her journey starts with finding an answer to the last question and the result is the book "Thrive".

Arianna Huffington's predicament is common among many professionals and senior executives. A lot of them spend their entire life pursuing a career that provides them with enormous power and money. It is now known that many chronic diseases, like diabetes and cardiac illnesses, are the result of an extremely stressful modern life style. Most educated people know that a stressful life style leads to these diseases. Furthermore, it is common knowledge that diet and exercise can prevent and manage these diseases. According to Arianna Huffington there is much more to managing one's life successfully, than simple diet and exercise. One needs a 'Third Metric" and this consists of Well-being, Wisdom, Wonder and Giving.

"Well-being" is a result of effective management of body, mind and spirit. Apart from diet and exercise Arianna focuses on "mindfulness" and "meditation". In the last few years, medical profession has come to accept that mindfulness and meditation, sometimes used as synonyms, have a positive effect on reducing blood pressure, blood glucose levels and cholesterol. Teaching meditation has now become a big business with Deepak Chopra leading the movement. Many top executives have now become ardent followers of meditation. Arianna Huffington mentions a number of steps that Fortune 500 companies have taken to encourage their people to practice meditation. One of the huge problems that multi-nationals face are the problems of health of their senior employees, who are over worked, under slept and generally not in shape to take critical decisions. Companies are now forcing their staff to spend more time with themselves and their families. Hopefully this will improve the quality of their human assets. We are not far away from companies making a "40 min" walk mandatory for all employees!

The path "well-being" does not seem to be difficult compared to "wisdom". Much of our time is now controlled by technology products such as cell phones, tablets and computers. We all see ourselves stuck to our cell phones all the time, either texting, talking or browsing. Instead of being users of technology, technology is using us. The author talks quite a bit about the technology dependency issues. Wisdom is the result of turning ourselves from outside to the inside world. We need to learn to deal with ourselves, manage the inner world and participate in the outer world with mindfulness. Intuition is the key to developing wisdom. This is, of course, easier said than done.

According to Arianna Huffington "wonder" is the result of developing correct perspective in life. Wonder at what is happening around us is exhilarating and creative. The best example, often quoted in literature, is the kids. She also discusses in some detail about death and the death over dinner movement.

The last part of the Third Metric is "giving". Giving happens when we go beyond ourselves and reach out to other people, or other living things on this planet. Whether one donates or volunteers the results are always positive on the mental and spiritual well-being of ours.

The book offers a number anecdotes and a lot of information from authentic sources to sustain the system of the Third Metric detailed by Arianna Huffington. Technology plays a major focus in the book with several references to its destructive and disruptive effects on our lives. Management of technology is a key feature of her thrust toward leading a saner life. There is a strong undercurrent of women's problems in a man's world, throughout the book. It is a consolidation of much of what is known across spirituality, neuro-science, exercise-science, nutrition and common sense.

The book is interesting because of the quantity and quality of the information she provides and the synthesis of this information in to a cogent thesis. With each chapter's summary as a few steps for practice, it is a simple and elegant DIY book on thriving! There is a strong Buddhist influence in her discussions on mindfulness and meditation, a common feature in the West.

The essential summary of Thrive is: "So find your place to stand-your place of wisdom and peace and strength. And from tat place, remake the world in your own image, according to your own definition of success, so that all of us-women and men-can thrive and live our lives with grace, more joy, more compassion, more gratitude, and yes, more love."
