Association of hypoxia-inducible factor-1α polymorphisms with susceptibility to nonsmall-cell lung cancer: A summative analysis

The genetic underlying factors affecting the susceptibility of lung cancer is an interesting issue in chest medicine. There are many genetic variants that are mentioned for interrelationship with lung cancer. Of several genetic polymorphisms, the hypoxia-inducible factor-1α (HIF1A) polymorphism is widely studied. In fact, the effect of this genetic polymorphism is mentioned in several cancers including lung cancer.,,,, Regarding the HIF1A polymorphism, the HIF1A Pro582Ser, and HIF1A Ala588Thr are the two variants that are widely studied for interrelationship with lung diseases. Here, the authors perform a summative analysis on the studies regarding the genetic epidemiology of HIF1A Pro582Ser and HIF1A Ala588Thr among patients with susceptibility to non-small-cell lung cancer.
First, the authors search for the available published data in the international database PubMed to recruit the studies on HIF1A Pro582Ser and HIF1A Ala588Thr among patients with susceptibility to nonsmall-cell lung cancer. The reports with complete data and published in English are included for further summative analysis. From the literature search, the data form two included publications, are retrospectively summarized and analyzed. Regarding HIF1A Pro582Ser, there are 438 cases and 300 controls. Regarding HIF1A Ala588Thr, there are 437 cases and 300 controls. From the summative retrospective analysis, the gene frequency distribution is presented in [Table 1]. From the Chi-square test, there is a significant association between genotype and lung cancer in the HIF1A Pro582Ser study (P = 0.02) and there is also a significant association between genotype and lung cancer in HIF1A Ala588Thr study (P = 0.01). Based on the present study, it can confirm the association between HIF1A polymorphisms and susceptibility to nonsmall-cell lung cancer.
