We are currently planning an oral cancer study in our department and we were conducting a literature search on the subject. A particular article [1] caught our attention as it is a recent review about the subject at hand; thus, we read the article carefully to gather data about the classification of etiological factors. However, there were some points which caused some confusion and conflict.

In the introduction part of the article, it is stated that oral or head-and-neck cancers and minor salivary gland tumors are mainly influenced by two main factors which are genetic and epigenetic factors. However, in the article, the etiological factors were described under four main titles. Articles we have come across during our search classified the etiological factors in various ways, since there is no consensus on the classification of etiological factors.[2],[3] In this article, however, the classification described throughout the manuscript does not match the statement in the introduction part. It is not very clear whether environmental factors and immunosuppression are a part of the epigenetic factors or not. Furthermore, we believe that subtitles under the main title “Immunosuppression” do not exactly represent the main title. It would have been a more apprehensible article if the classification was described properly.
