The incidence of prostate cancer is on the rise. Widespread use of PSA for screening has led to considerable controversies besides being responsible for detecting even indolent prostatic cancer. Recently, American army has issued an advisory against routine screening of its staff with PSA.
This move has been criticized by American Oncology Association. This is indicative of both dynamic growth in information regarding prostate cancer as well as lack of clarity on innumerable issues related to screening, diagnosis, ideal imaging, treatment, and prevention.
The book being reviewed is multi-authored and edited eminently by Dr. Tindall and Dr. Scardine. The book is comprehensive and sweepingly wide in its reach. The style and content of each of the chapters, starting with pathology of prostate, etiology, tumor biology, androgen receptor, imaging, role of nomogram in the management of prostatic cancer, all the therapeutic modalities, and prevention of prostate cancer, is crisp and comprehensive. Controversies are well delineated and debated. A urologist or an oncologist interested in prostate cancer will gain enough information for making clinical decision.
It is a highly recommended book for oncologists.
A good read and time well spent.
